  • 12th March, 1940—Finland and the Soviet Union sign the Moscow Peace Treaty, ending the Winter War with significant territorial concessions by Finland.
  • 13th March, 1940—The Moscow Peace Treaty comes into effect at noon; hostilities between Finland and the Soviet Union cease.
  • 16th March, 1940—British Royal Navy destroyers encounter German aircraft over the North Sea, indicating increased German naval activity.
  • 18th March, 1940—Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini meet at the Brenner Pass and agree to form closer cooperation against France and the United Kingdom.
  • 20th March, 1940—Paul Reynaud becomes the new Prime Minister of France, succeeding Édouard Daladier.
